GRP ENCLOSURES

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) enclosures, often referred to as fiberglass housings, are specialized, non-corrosive cabinets used to protect sensitive industrial, electrical, and mechanical equipment in harsh outdoor or indoor environments. They are favoured for their extreme durability, with a typical lifespan exceeding 20–30 years.

Utilities & Energy: Housing electrical switchgear, transformers, and distribution boards.

Gas & Water: Protecting gas governors, water meters, and pump control panels.

Telecoms & Data: Sheltering communication equipment, fibre optic connections, and broadband cabinets.

Transport & Infrastructure: Used for roadside monitoring, railway signalling equipment, and EV charging stations.

Industrial & Chemical: Providing explosion-proof or chemically resistant storage for machinery controls in, for example, wastewater treatment plants.

Public Sector: Housing CCTV, security systems, and street lighting controls.

Welfare Units: Used for security cabins, gatehouses and, in some cases, small walk-in enclosures for site work.

GRP enclosures are manufactured from a composite material combining polymer resin and glass fibre via hand lay-up production within moulds and also covering a wooden or steel framing.

Material Components:

Glass Fibres: Provide high tensile strength and stiffness.

Polyester Resin: Acts as the matrix, holding the fibres together and providing environmental resistance.

Gel Coat: A durable exterior coating that provides UV protection and a smooth finish. Most common colours are Green, Grey or Black although a large variety of colours are available on request.

Reinforcement: Usually fire-retardant (BS476 Part 7, Class 2) to prevent the spread of flame.

Core: Often feature a 12mm or 18mm treated plywood core for added strength.

IP Rating: Generally, these cabinets provide high ingress protection, typically ranging from IP55 (dust/weatherproof) to IP65 or IP66 (dust-tight and water-resistant).

Standard Fittings: High grade 304 grade Stainless steel hinges, locking systems, lock covers & door retainers, fibreglass encapsulated steel bolt-down flanges for securing to the ground.

Corrosion Resistance: Unlike metal, GRP does not rust, making it ideal for coastal or harsh, corrosive environments.

Non-Conductive: Superior electrical insulation properties make them safer for high-voltage applications.

Lightweight & Strong: High strength-to-weight ratio makes them easier to transport and install than steel.

Low Maintenance: Requires no painting, and resists UV, chemicals, and temperature fluctuations.
